What is the Best way to Start my Team Improving my Business?
I have seen a LOT of different attempts by organizations to implement change and improvement programs across their teams and the #1 biggest challenge that almost everyone continues to stumble on is this:
Start! Do it today, right now! Go!
There are a myriad of minutia that a leader can choose to get stuck before beginning. The reality is only three things are absolutely necessary:
Logistics + Vision + Measure
1) Logistics — coordinate to get the team together — location, frequency, and duration with a start date and time.
2) Kickoff Leader’s Speech — what are we doing and why is it important?
3) Measure with a Goal — what can you measure, that is important to your work, to know the value of the improvements?
Even these items have taken leaders weeks to create. Stop thinking too hard and just do it! It should take you no more than 60-minutes maximum to do all three — 15-minutes for logistics, 5-minutes to create a few bullets for your speech, and 40-minutes to select an existing measure or create one the team can update as you go. If you are a leader of a large company, select a single leader and their team to begin and create the above 3 together. In your speech, speak from the heart — why is this important? Also, one of your bullet points should be Change as We Go — we will figure out how to do this better every time we get together — the important thing is that we create the Habit of Change as a team. Finally, to pick a measure, focus on your purpose — What is the most important thing to accomplish in my team’s work this year? How can we measure that?
